Mt. Enterprise 64, Hawkins 31
Kevin Pope accounted for 355 all-purpose yards and Mount Enterprise blasted Hawkins 64-31 in a non-district game Friday.
Pope rushed for 209 yards, passed for 66 more and had an 80-yard kickoff return.
He scored three touchdowns and threw for another.
D.T. Bryant rushed for 113 yards and Marlon White added an additional 57 yards on five carries for Mount Enterprise, which finished with 479 yards of total offense.
Unlike last week when the Wildcats didn't dent the scoreboard until the second quarter on the way to a 34-0 shutout of Cushing, Mount Enterprise (2-0) scored just two minutes into the game against the Hawks.
Pope finished off a 75-yard drive with a 40-yard touchdown run.
After Christian Merritt's PAT made it 7-0, Hawkins (0-2) methodically marched down the field with its short passing game and scored when Ryan Gattis connected with Jacob Wright on a 6-yard scoring toss.
The extra point was missed and the Wildcats held a slim 7-6 advantage.
“We scouted them and had films on them and we were worried because of the way they pass the ball,” said Wildcats head coach Louie Johnson, who missed last week's opener due to an illness. “Gattis is really good and (running back) Fernando Gutierrez is really good.
“I told people earlier today they have a good coaching staff and they are well coached and they do things right,” he said.
Following Hawkins' score, the Wildcats began to pull away.
Pope took the ensuing kickoff and raced 80 yards and D.T. Bryant followed with a 56-yard scoring run on the next drive to make it 20-6.
Larry Solomon had a pair of rushing touchdowns and Hawkins countered with two scores of its own as Mount Enterprise led 33-18 with just a minute to play in the half.
Then the Wildcats pulled some trickery out of their aresenal.
Solomon threw a swing pass to Pope in the backfield, and he pulled up and tossed the ball to Shannon Davis for a 66-yard touchdown pass and a 40-18 lead at the break.
Pope added another score in the third on an 8-yard run
In the fourth quarter, Merritt had a 21-yard field goal and Marlon White added a 29-yard scoring run to make it 56-31.
The Wildcats defense put up the final points of the game when Zack Pollett recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Colton Byler had intercepted Gattis and returned it 30 yards before having the ball stripped from his grasp at the goal line where Pollett alertly fell on it.
“Our kids played well, and I am proud of them.” said Johnson.
Mount Enteprprise travels to Shelbyville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Dragons dealt the Wildcats one of their two losses last season - the other came against Grapeland in the playoffs.
“Shelbyville is another passing team, and we will have to be ready for more of what we saw (Friday),” Johnson said
