Mt. Enterprise 35, Timpson 0
MOUNT ENTERPRISE - Kevin Pope took a short break. Then he took the wind out of Timpson.
The Mount Enterprise senior running back capped a long scoring drive in the third quarter with a 34-yard touchdown run and the Wildcats rebounded from a rare loss to shutout Timpson 35-0.
Mount Enterprise (5-1, 1-1) led 14-0 at the break and held Timpson to a 3-and-out to begin the third quarter.
The Wildcats took over at their own 20-yard line following a punt.
Pope ran for 16 yards on first down and followed that up with a 13-yard run.
He exited the field to take a breather and D.T. Bryant had a 1-yard run.
Quarterback Larry Solomon completed a 11-yard pass to Grant Grubbs on the next play to move the ball to the 39-yard line.
After Solomon ran for five yards, Pope re-entered and took a toss to the left and wound up in the end zone with a 34-yard scoring run to make it 21-0 after Christian Merritt's third PAT on the night.
Pope finished with 170 yards on 17 carries.
“I thought that (touchdown) took the wind out of Timpson's sails,” said Mount Enterprise coach Louie Johnson. “With our offense, it takes us a little while to get comfortable. But, we were able to go in at halftime and make a few adjustments.”
The Wildcats would add two scores in the fourth, the first coming on an 87-yard Solomon to Shannon Davis pass.
On the play, Davis caught the ball near midfield, stepped backwards to avoid one defender, took advantage of a Grubbs downfield block and raced untouched into the end zone to make it 28-0.
Solomon completed 6 of 12 passes for 172 yards. Davis caught three passes for 114 yards and is now averaging 41.6 yards per reception this season.
Bryant then capped the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats' fifth touchdown of the night.
They scored just one time last week in a 30-6 loss to Joaquin, just Mount Enterprise's third loss in the last 15 games.
“We (the coaches) told the players that that loss (to Joaquin) was on us,” Johnson said. “We just didn't play well, but were able to come back this week and play better.”
While the offense amassed almost 400 yards, the defense held “da Bears” to six first downs and less than 120 yards of total offense.
Mount Enterprise's defense had five takeaways and limited Timpson to two yards or fewer on 19 plays.
Bryant had a pair of interceptions while Blake Chapman added another. Pope and Timmy Oswald each recovered fumbles.
An early first quarter punting miscue by the Wildcats gave the Bears their best chance at a score with a first down at the Mount Enterprise 32-yard line.
The Bears converted a fourth and three for a first down at the Wildcats 22, but then turned the ball over with a fumble that Pope recovered.
That would wind up being the Bears' deepest penetration of the night.
Mount Enteprise then marched 79 yards in 10 plays with Grant Grubbs making a juggling 5-yard touchdown grab.
Merritt added the first of his five PATs on the night to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter.
Grubbs finished with 58 yards on three catches, including a 42-yarder in the second quarter.
The Wildcats wouldn't find the end zone again until just before the half when Pope capped a 26-yard drive with a 20-yard run around right end.
Merritt's PAT gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead before they opened up the lead in the second half.
The Wildcats visit Waskom at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“Waskom is big and powerful, but we still need to just worry about this thing one game at a time.”
