Texas Day Big Hit with Students Mt. Enterprise Elementary students braved the snow Friday, March 7th and celebrated "Texas Day." The day was planned in conjunction with studies of various aspects of Texas history and culture. Volunteers gave demonstrations of various "old- time" methods of creating items to give the students an idea of what life was like in the early years of Texas. Some of the demonstrations included butter churning, bullet making, rope making, whittling, and yarn spinnning. The students also participated in various traditional Texas pastimes such as horshoe throwing and washer throwing as well as sack races and stick horse racing. At the end of the day, the students were treated to a mini-concert of traditional Texas music presented by the "Cherokee Three and Me," with Mr. James Kerss (father of 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Melissa Duncan) singing lead. Texas Day organizer Karen Risinger said of the event, "In spite of the weather, I thought it turned out well. We had lots of fun, and the kids learned a lot about Texas!" |
